Becoming a criminal lawyer is one of the most rewarding jobs that you can hope to start a career in. Financially the role is rewarding and the job satisfaction you can achieve is unrivalled. Every day as a criminal lawyer is different which means you’ll never get bored. The road to becoming one can be long, but the effort you put in is worth it. Here is our brief guide to some ways you can become a criminal lawyer.
What to Study at GCSE and A-Level
To study law and eventually become a solicitor, you’ll need to be bright and achieve high grades at all levels of education. Starting at GCSE, you’ll certainly need to excel at maths, English language and science as a base, but it’s also worth studying rigorously in history, geography, English literature and a foreign language as well. When you start your A-Levels, you should consider taking at least two more traditional subjects - like English or History - and a more modern subject like politics, psychology or specifically criminology.
When it comes to an undergraduate degree, this will give you an advantage above those who haven’t achieved a degree and most, if not all, of the top firms will expect you to have at least a BA. Choosing a subject can be tough, but the most obvious route is a criminal law and/or criminology course. However, you might want to keep your options open and opt for a Common Law LLB and then specialise at MA level or move on to career training at a firm after graduation.
Although it’s imperative to have a good background of education when starting a career in criminal law, it’s just as essential to get some career training, too. You should always apply to a firm once you’ve completed your undergraduate degree and then either work directly as an apprentice or consider work experience placements, shadowing or pro bono work at a charity.
